Succulent Monsoon Care

Top Up The Pots

At the onset of the monsoon top up your pots with potting mix and grit, do not leave any space in the pot, fill up to the brim of the pot, this will not allow any extra water to accumulate in the pot.

Overhead Net

Tighten the overhead net, do not let any ripple or bend in the net, make it as straight as possible check for folds and stiches and replace if torn, a good uv protected 50 percent sun cut white net not only saves the plants from scorching during hot days but also disperses the water during heavy rains. But the net should be tied straight and preferably on a iron frame, any crease, fold or tear will lead to water dripping straight on the plant and leading to damage and rot.

Raised Stands

If your area tends to get logged with water during the rainy season, its best to clear the drainage of the area and also as a precaution use stands or bricks to put the succulents at a raised level so that no water logging can affect your plants.

Air Flow

Ensure airflow in the area, ensure cross ventilation of air, or else install a fan or exhaust to ensure any excess water gets dried off. Air circulation also helps in bringing the temperature down.

Protection

Use a good quality systemic fungicide like bavistine, saaf or any other available to protect the plant from fungal attack. Dose – 2 gram per liter of water, every 15 days, both water and spray. kindly time it with your water cycle do not over doze.

Fertilization

During the growth season use NPK 13:00:45 and a good micronutrient powder (combi 2) Dose : - mix 2 gram of this NPK and ½ gram of the micronutrient powder and spray and water every 15 days till the monsoon lasts. Kindly note that fungicide, NPK and micronutrient can be mixed together and given every 15 days.

Groom your succulents.

This means you should take care of fallen debris near your succulents that may give rise to other complications like fungal and bug infestation. It mostly consists of old leaves that are rejected out from the lower side of the plant. These leaves can also cause bad airflow, which hurts the fluent growth pattern, as it will interfere with their breathing and photosynthesis process. Decaying and dead leaves can increase extra moisture around them, a welcoming sign for the pest infection or other lethal problems.

Moreover, we should look after the succulent core; it should also be clear of dead leaves. These decaying leaves will initiate the rotting, which can be very harmful to its existence.

5. Water infrequently

To avoid extra moisture, as excess humidity in air and showers makes the soil wet for more periods. Excess moisture can give a path to fungus and pest infestation or rot, lethal for the succulents. Therefore, skipping water days is a must in the monsoon season; this will adjust the total water intake with monsoon showers.

For example, one can try 10-15 days of the watering period if one waters them once a week earlier. But, if you are worrying that you may misjudge the water intake and underwater succulent. It will be a relief to know that under-watering is better than over-watering; your succulents can cope with low water intake for a significant amount of time.

You can use the rainwater to water the succulents as it has a lower pH value, which is favorable for the succulent leaves and other parts. You can also store this water in some containers for future usage.
